How to build a log cabin or home?

You’ve found the perfect plot of land to call your own. This could be a small acreage just outside the city, or you have the perfect spot on the water at your favourite lake.

You’ve already decided you want something unique, specifically a log cabin but are unsure of the process involved or who to talk with about construction.

We hope this answers many of your questions on log homes and cabins, and how we can make the dream become reality for you

How do you build a log cabin or home?

Log cabins are different from your typical wood frame construction and are much more involved.

You may want to reach out to our Back Country team for consultation before deciding on what style of cabin you want. This will help you make an informed decision about what would satisfy all your requirements. Once you have an idea of what you want to pursue, we will work together with you and our architectural planners to create certified plans that meet all building codes and most importantly your expectations.

Once building plans are approved, the type of wood is selected. Douglas fir, spruce, or Western red cedar logs are primarily used. Logs are shipped to Back Country Log & Timber’s yard for scribing and cutting. Once the shell is constructed, the window and door openings are cut in and pre-drilling is done for electrical. Tagging each piece and dismantling begins, loading the truck with logs, ready to head to the final site.

Providing your foundation is ready, it can take 3 to 7 days to reassemble the log package on your site.

How much does a log home cost in Canada?

Many factors come into play to determine the cost of a log home. Log home size and the amount of detail and prep work needed are the most significant factors involved in price, including the construction method and material. You’ll want to plan for 30 to 50% increase in cost compared to a standard conventional home.

Three main ways to build a log home.

Full Scribe is the traditional log home style, using horizontal logs stacked on top of one another and interlocked at the corners with notches.

Post and Beam Log has many round vertical and horizontal logs on top. Typically, more traditional log framing may be used.

Dovetail Log Home using either squared timbers or round log construction. The corners are interlocked with compound dovetail joinery.
